For a job interview, I was asked to speak on student engagement. The night before the interview I came up with the idea of an “engagement quilt,” like an old patchwork quilt with several different pieces that might not be obviously related creating the design.

To me, colleges and the community need to engage students on three different levels. Students need to engage with the content, of course. But they also need personal engagement with other people, and engagement with their potential profession. I also feel there are five key players — the community, the institution, the instructor, other students, and the content itself. (The content is so important it’s a player and a level!)

I used the slides below to help illustrate the idea.
